Feds Want to Stop Car Theft by Asking Canadians for Ideas

Canada has been making world headlines as the car theft capital of the world, with residents in Ontario taking extreme measures to protect their vehicles from being stolen.

People have being using trackers such as Apple’s AirTag to locate their stolen cars, which are typically smuggled to overseas nations.

A recent study from Équité Association said a car is stolen every 5 minutes in Canada, as the auto theft crisis remains out of control, specifically in Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada and also in Western Canada.

So what’s the federal government to do to try to stop cars from being stolen? Launch a “Vehicle Theft Prevention” challenge, essentially calling on small and medium sized businesses to come up with solutions. No, this is not a story from The Onion.

“We need your ideas to prevent auto theft in Canada! The Vehicle Theft Prevention challenge is your chance to share innovative solutions with us!” said François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry on Wednesday.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada says the “proposed solution must be affordable, safe, easy to install and commercially viable,” with funding coming from the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program.

Back in February, the feds banned ‘flipper’ wireless devices, in an effort to combat car theft.

In other words, the government is holding a hackathon to try to come up with crowdsourced ideas to stop car theft, instead of putting and keeping repeat car thieves in jail. Or what about talking to car manufacturers to make their cars harder to steal?

I know what will fix it…a CTT. Car theft Tax. Because higher taxes fixes everything.

Maybe don't release car thieves as soon as they are caught? Maybe follow up on tracking stolen cars with AirTags in them instead of saying there is nothing you can do? I've got lots more ideas if you need them! lol It's not rocket science guys- the stolen items are literally, as comedians would say, the size of a Buick!
