Sonos Reportedly Considers Relaunching S2 App as Issues Persist

Sonos is reportedly considering relaunching a previous version of its app on iOS and Android. As the company continues to navigate issues following the launch of the refreshed app, the return of S2 may be in the cards.
In a recent report from The Verge, the relaunch of the S2 app is on the table as the company continues to identify possible ways of mitigating further frustrations from customers. It’s claimed that “discussions high up within Sonos” have been occurring. Sonos may allow users to fall back to the older S2 software.
Sonos launched Sonos Ace, its first pair of wireless headphones in May. The company overhauled its entire app experience with a new interface and the ability to sync Sonos Ace with its Arc speaker. However, since its launch, the new app has been plagued by issues, resulting in negative backlash.
The new Sonos app, while offering a fresh coat of paint and some intregal connectivity features for its Ace headset is sadly unstable and missing features. The core ‘TV audio swap’ feature between Ace and Arc is often buggy and unreliable. The new app also lost features like the sleep timer and editable queue. The buzz and reception around the new app have been so stale that the app now sits at a 1.3-star review average on Google Play.
Since May, Sonos has been steadily working on solving the issues and winning back customers. Prioritizing this, Sonos has chosen to delay the release of two major products. This includes the product codenamed Lasso, a successor to the Arc soundbar.
Originally slated for the fourth quarter of 2024, Sonos’ CEO Patrick Spence recently said, “I will not rest until we’ve addressed these issues and have customers raving about Sonos again.” While it’s reported these products may still launch sometime in October, it’s apparent that the company aims to reconcile with its user base first and foremost.
