The latest update aims to transform the Stories experience, making it more interactive and community-oriented, similar to how users can engage in real-time conversations during livestreams.
The new commenting feature has already started appearing for some users, including marketing strategist Taylor Loren, who shared her experience on Threads, Meta’s social platform. Even Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has highlighted this update, sharing a screenshot in the company’s Channel (shown above).
Instagram understands that not all users may want to open up their Stories to public comments. Therefore, the platform has included an option for users to disable the commenting feature if they prefer a more private interaction.
The decision to introduce comments on Stories seems to be driven by the evolving behavior of Instagram’s user base. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has frequently emphasized how Stories have become one of the most popular features on the app, often surpassing the traditional feed posts in terms of user activity.

Instagram’s move to enable public comments on Stories is part of a broader strategy to increase engagement across the platform. The addition of this feature aligns with recent updates aimed at enriching the user experience.
For example, Instagram recently introduced the ability to add music to user profiles, giving individuals a new way to express their personality. Another innovative feature, “Reveal,” allows users to hide Stories, which can only be viewed by followers after sending a direct message.
