Bluetooth 6.0 Core Specification Brings Advanced New Features

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has officially launched the latest version of the Bluetooth Core Specification, version 6.0, introducing several innovative features and improvements.

Among the key highlights are the inclusion of Bluetooth Channel Sounding, decision-based advertising filtering, advertiser monitoring, and significant upgrades to the Isochronous Adaptation Layer (ISOAL), LL extended feature set, and frame space configuration.

Bluetooth Channel Sounding

This feature allows for more precise location tracking, making it easier for users to locate lost items in applications like “Find My” solutions. Additionally, it offers enhanced security in digital key systems by ensuring that only authorized users within a specified range can unlock doors or access restricted areas.

Decision-Based Advertising Filtering

Version 6.0 also introduces decision-based advertising filtering, which significantly improves the efficiency of Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) extended advertising.

Traditionally, Bluetooth devices would scan both primary and secondary channels, often wasting time and energy scanning irrelevant packets. With this new filtering system, the content of a packet received on a primary channel can now determine whether or not the device should scan secondary channels.

Monitoring Advertisers

The new monitoring advertisers feature addresses this issue by enabling the Bluetooth LE controller to notify the host when a device of interest moves in or out of range.

ISOAL Enhancement

The Isochronous Adaptation Layer (ISOAL) plays a critical role in transmitting larger data frames through smaller link-layer packets, ensuring that timing information required for correct data processing is preserved. In version 6.0, ISOAL has been optimized with a new framing mode that reduces latency.

LL Extended Feature Set

The LL extended feature set in Bluetooth 6.0 allows devices to exchange information about the link-layer features they support. This update makes it easier for feature-rich devices to communicate and collaborate, ensuring smoother compatibility and better performance for complex applications.

Frame Space Update

Previously, Bluetooth Core Specification set a fixed time of 150 microseconds (µs) between adjacent transmissions in a connection event or connected isochronous stream (CIS) subevent. Version 6.0 changes this by making the frame spacing negotiable, meaning that it can now be adjusted based on the application’s needs.

With new features like Bluetooth Channel Sounding and decision-based advertising filtering, version 6.0 is set to offer developers more creative freedom while enhancing the performance, security, and reliability of Bluetooth-enabled devices.

To be fair, Apple has been pretty good at updating their Bluetooth/Wifi hardware for the past 10 years.
