Apple Has Made iPhone 16 Easier to Repair with New Features

Apple has made significant improvements to the repairability of its iPhone 16 series, addressing concerns about the difficulty of fixing its devices.

According to the tech giant, its iPhone 16 models introduce new technologies and features aimed at making repairs easier, faster, and more accessible, both for users and repair professionals (via Engadget).

While Apple has made gradual progress in improving the repairability of its products, the iPhone 15 faced some key challenges, as previously highlighted by the repairability experts at iFixit.

Two main issues were identified: the difficulty of battery removal and a “parts pairing” problem, particularly with the LiDAR sensor. Due to these concerns, iFixit awarded the iPhone 15 a low repairability score of 4/10.

Apple appears to have taken these criticisms seriously and has now introduced a new method for battery removal in the iPhone 16 series. The new approach uses an ionic liquid adhesive that responds to a low-voltage electrical current. By applying a 9V cell to this adhesive, the battery can be safely and easily removed from the enclosure.

This innovation replaces the previous stretch-release adhesive, making the battery removal process quicker and less hazardous.

Another significant upgrade with the iPhone 16 series is the change to the Face ID sensor hardware. In previous models, only Apple technicians could swap out the TrueDepth Camera, which is responsible for Face ID.

Now, with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, users or repair professionals can replace this component without affecting the device’s security or privacy features. This represents a huge step forward in making the repair process more independent and accessible, reducing reliance on Apple’s in-house repair services.

Another notable feature in the iPhone 16 series is the introduction of the Repair Assistant, a tool designed to address the longstanding issue of parts pairing.

The new Repair Assistant eliminates this bottleneck by allowing users and technicians to configure both new and used parts directly on the device itself, speeding up the process and simplifying repairs.

This change also extends to previous iPhone models, as Apple announced that iPhone 12 and later will benefit from this updated parts pairing capability.
