YouTube Confirms Global Rollout of Ads on Pause Screen
YouTube has officially confirmed that ads will now appear during your paused screen time, marking the broader rollout of “pause ads” to all advertisers.

The news, first confirmed by YouTube communications manager Oluwa Falodun to The Verge, means that viewers may now see ads whenever they pause a video.
Pause ads are designed to appear on the screen when viewers stop a video, offering advertisers a new opportunity to engage with audiences without interrupting the main content. This form of advertising has been tested in the past by other streaming platforms, such as Hulu and AT&T, and has proven to be a lucrative option for companies like Google.
In fact, Google’s chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, revealed in April 2023 that pause ads were a major hit with advertisers, helping to drive revenue without disrupting the overall viewing experience.
The pilot program for YouTube’s pause ads started quietly in 2023, with a limited set of advertisers testing the waters. However, by mid-2024, Reddit users began reporting that they had noticed an increase in pause ads across the platform, signaling that YouTube was expanding the feature to a wider audience.

According to YouTube, pause ads are intended to provide a “less interruptive” experience for viewers, especially compared to traditional mid-roll ads that often break into the middle of content.
While this may seem like a more viewer-friendly alternative, YouTube has not indicated that these pause ads will reduce the frequency of its standard ads. Viewers can still expect to encounter regular pre-roll and mid-roll ads as they watch videos. How to bypass ads on YouTube? You can use third-party browsers such as Brave, for example.

I hope this doesn't impact Premium subscriptions
I find YT impossible to watch these days without Premium… it's just ads interrupted by short videos.
Brave on iOS and Mac works great still
