Apple Seeks to Overturn App Store Ruling in Epic Games Battle

Apple is making a bold move to overturn or significantly narrow the 2021 court injunction that challenged its control over the App Store, as revealed in a recent court filing (via Reuters).

The tech giant has asked U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to dismiss or limit the ruling, claiming that recent legal decisions strengthen its case. These legal developments have come into play after a prolonged legal battle with “Fortnite” creator Epic Games.

The 2021 decision by Judge Rogers ordered Apple to allow developers, such as Epic Games, to direct users to alternative payment methods. This ruling was seen as a significant blow to Apple’s lucrative App Store model, which generates substantial revenue.

In its latest legal maneuver, Apple cited new rulings from the California state courts and the U.S. Supreme Court, which it believes support its stance. According to the company, these decisions show that its App Store practices do not violate antitrust laws.

Apple argued that any injunction should only apply to Epic Games and not benefit other developers, attempting to limit the broader implications of the ruling.

One of the cases referenced by Apple involves a proposed California consumer class action lawsuit challenging the company’s App Store practices. Another case Apple pointed to is a federal court decision that dealt with allegations that the Biden administration had improperly pressured social media platforms to curb misinformation.

Despite Apple’s efforts to challenge the injunction, Epic Games continues to push forward in the legal fight. Epic has accused Apple of failing to comply with the 2021 court order and has requested that the court hold Apple in contempt.

As of now, Apple has not commented publicly on its recent court filing, and Epic Games has also declined to comment.
