M1 iMac Users Report Horizontal Lines Appearing on Displays

For the past many months, owners of Apple’s 24-inch iMac equipped with the M1 chip have been voicing concerns about horizontal lines suddenly appearing on their screens.

The problem, as highlighted by MacRumors, has been reported across multiple platforms, including the Apple Support Community, Reddit, and iFixit Answers, sparking widespread discussion.

Many users have reported that the horizontal lines began to appear 18 to 24 months after purchasing their iMacs. This timing is especially problematic, as most affected devices are no longer covered under Apple’s standard one-year warranty.

For those without AppleCare+ extended coverage, this means potential repair costs just as the problem emerges. Some customers who reached out to Apple reported that the company offered complimentary repairs as a goodwill gesture, while others said they were forced to pay for the repair service.

One symptom frequently mentioned by users is that the top-right corner of the iMac becomes unusually hot to the touch once the lines start appearing. However, this has not been confirmed as a definitive cause of the problem.

Since the issue seems to affect units purchased around mid-2021, some speculate it could be a hardware-related fault in the M1 iMac series. This specific model was launched in May 2021, and complaints have persisted for nearly two years.

While there has been a steady stream of complaints about the M1 iMac, the newer models featuring the M3 chip, released less than a year ago, have not yet seen similar widespread reports of display issues. This suggests that the problem might be isolated to the earlier M1 model.

Apple has been known to offer service programs for various hardware issues in the past, such as battery replacements for certain iPhone models and screen repairs for select MacBooks.

Yet, no such service program has been introduced for the M1 iMac’s display issue so far.
