CRTC Drops $8 Million to Expand Rural Internet in Manitoba

The CRTC is funding high-speed fibre Internet projects for 16 rural communities in Manitoba.

The telecom regulator will spend $8 million for Westman Communications Group build around 310 kilometres of new fibre infrastructure (works out to $25,806 per kilometre).

This funding is part of the CRTC’s $3.2 billion Broadband Fund. So far, it’s improved Internet and cellphone services in 270 communities, linking up schools, health care facilities, and community centres.

“We are taking action to help ensure that all Canadians have access to high-speed Internet. The projects announced today will bring fibre Internet to 16 rural communities in Manitoba. This will improve access to health care and other government services, support small businesses, and create new economic opportunities,” said Vicky Eatrides, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, CRTC, in a statement.

The CRTC says more funding announcements are on the way as they continue to review applications.
