iPad mini (2024) Reviews Roundup: Small and ‘Boring’ Upgrade
Apple’s updated iPad mini (2024) with A17 Pro chip was announced by a press release last week.
Today, the media embargo on the first reviews was lifted. Most reviews called this a minor and “boring” upgrade, as nothing really changed aside from the chip upgrade, while the “jelly scrolling” issue appears to be fixed, according to some reviews (some said they couldn’t notice a difference.
The iPad mini gets double the base storage, but there is a slight price hike in Canada. A17 Pro brings support for Apple Intelligence, which won’t even have all its features available at launch. Touch ID remains, instead of Face ID. Wi-Fi 6E is now here, along with Apple Pencil Pro support. The design and display (where’s OLED?) remains the same. Apple needs to step up its game and make some great products again, instead of these minor refreshes. They didn’t even come up with a new wallpaper for this iPad refresh.

To each their own. I bought one. Coming from no iPad its a good upgrade to me. Yes I wish it was a pro iPad variant but this will do until apple decides to give it an M chip, 120 hz display, face id and less bezels but being on a plane every two weeks this will really come in handy. Tired of watching shows and reading books on my iphone even if it is a pro max.
If this is your first iPad, this is definitely an upgrade! but for longtime iPad mini owners, this was underwhelming.
I am a long time IPAD Mini owner. It's the Apple product I use the most. For me the increased storage space, the faster chip to support AI, and increased RAM is enough for me to upgrade. Of course I would like a better screen and thinner bezels. Who wouldn't?
But considering how often I use my IPAD Mini, I know I will be appreciate the 'underwhelming' upgrades.
I will admit though I hate the pastel colours. I prefer deep darker colours.
No I had the original 2010 iPad and in 2021 I bought the iPad pro 11″ to try out but found it too big for my travel needs so I gave it to my Dad. I was looking to buy the iPad mini 6 as it’s great for travel but knew the 7 gen was coming. To me it’s great but I can see the underwelmingness of it for sure. I never upgraded my iPhone this year so it’s also a way to get all the AI features when it finally makes its way to Canada.
I'm just glad it starts at 128GB and no more jelly–I skipped Mini 6 because of that alone.
Picking up my Mini 7 tomorrow.
