Future iPhone Models May Adopt Apple Watch Series 10 Power Effecient Display

Apple’s power-efficient display technology it uses on Apple Watch Series 10 may be introduced and leveraged for future iPhone models.

The display technology is categorized as LTPO3 and it debuted with the Apple Watch Series 10 this year. According to The Elec (via MacRumors), it’s believed that the technology could be implemented across iPhone to better assist with battery consumption.

The LTP03 display tech reduces power consumption through low refresh rates. To achieve this, a TFT panel adds oxide to a Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon (LTPS). The name LTPO3 comes from Apple’s conventional references to the OLED display used on the Apple Watch Series 10. It’s a nominal upgrade from the LTPO2 displays that Apple Watch Series 9 and iPhone 16 Pro devices feature.

Using LTPO3 tech, Apple can optimize each pixel to emit more light at wider angles. Apple Watch Series 10 has a boost in display brightness of 40 percent when viewed at an angle. LPTO3 also features the ability to support faster refresh rates when the Apple Watch is in always-on mode. It supports an upgraded refresh rate of one second from one minute. This means it’s easier to see the ticking second-hand while viewing from an angle.

In the past, Apple has used the Apple Watch as a test bed for display technology prior to bringing it to the iPhone. For instance, the original LTPO tech was first introduced on the Apple Watch Series 4. It was later brought to iPhone 13 Pro models when it launched in 2021. This isn’t to say that LPTO3 will come to iPhone 17 next year. However, the latest report indicates that the adoption could be on the roadmap.
