CRTC Adds Inuit Channel Uvagut TV to Basic TV Package

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) last week approved the addition of Uvagut TV, an Inuit-language channel, to the basic TV package available across Canada.

The channel, run by the Nunavut Independent Television Network, focuses on programming in Inuktut, offering culturally relevant content for Inuit communities.

The inclusion of Uvagut TV not only serves Inuit viewers, but also saw public support for the channel, with the CRTC receiving more than 5,000 comments advocating for an Inuit television service to be part of the basic package.

Uvagut TV, which translates to “Our TV,” is the country’s first 24/7 channel broadcasting in Inuktut, the language of Inuit communities. Launched in January 2021, Uvagut TV offers children’s shows, movies, documentaries, and cultural programs that help Inuit stay connected to their stories, language, and traditions. The network says this ensures kids grow up with shows in their own language and keeps Inuit informed about important issues affecting their lives and land.

Operated by NITV, a non-profit founded in 1991, the channel is available across Canada on cable and satellite and streams worldwide at uvagut.tv.

Uvagut TV’s addition will not raise the cost of the basic TV package, which will remain capped at a maximum of $25 per month from TV providers.
