Apple Launches M4 MacBook Pro Models with Performance Jumps

Apple today has revealed the final of its new M4 chips—M4 Max (which leaked nonetheless)—all of which can be found in the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max are built using second-generation 3-nanometer technology, making them faster and more power-efficient.
The M4 chip, which is ideal for everyday users, features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, delivering a performance boost of up to 1.8x over the M1 chip. It supports 32GB of memory with a bandwidth of 120GB/s and offers improved multitasking, gaming, and AI-driven features through its 16-core Neural Engine. There are now three Thunderbolt 4 ports, up from two. Entry RAM is now at 16GB, up from 8GB.
The M4 MacBook Pro now comes in Silver and Space Black with M4.
“Apple silicon has taken the Mac to unprecedented heights, and the rapid pace of innovation continues with M4 Pro and M4 Max,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, in a statement on Wednesday. “With the world’s fastest CPU core, immensely more powerful GPUs, and the fastest Neural Engine ever, the power-efficient performance and capabilities of the M4 family extend its lead as the most advanced lineup of chips in the industry.”

The M4 Pro takes things further, targeting professionals like developers and creative workers. It brings a 14-core CPU with 10 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, plus a 20-core GPU that offers twice the performance of the base M4. Compared to the M1 Pro, it is 1.9x faster and debuts Thunderbolt 5 for the first time, with 120Gb/s transfer speeds, plus support for up to 64GB of unified memory.
At the top of the lineup is the M4 Max, a high-end chip for professionals such as video editors and data scientists. The M4 Max offers a 16-core CPU with up to 12 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. Its 40-core GPU provides 4x the performance of leading AI PC chips, making it ideal for rendering massive projects and processing large datasets.
M4 Max supports 128GB of memory with 546GB/s bandwidth and comes with two video encoders and ProRes accelerators for real-time video editing. It also features Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, ensuring ultra-fast data transfers.
Both M4 Pro and M4 Max now come with 24GB of RAM standard, up from 16GB.
Also new is a nano-texture display option as an upgrade, while SDR content can be viewed at up to 1,000 nits brightness and HDR content at up to 1,600 peak nits. Also new is a 12MP Center Stage camera that keeps you centred during video calls.
Of course, these chip upgrades allow the MacBook Pro to easily integrate Apple Intelligence.
The new M4 MacBook Pro line starts from $2,099 in Canada, with 16GB RAM as the base memory and 512GB SSD storage. You can pre-order today and the new laptops launch on Friday, November 8, 2024.
