Google Earth and Maps Get AI Features for Developers, Urban Planners

Google is introducing new generative AI tools for Google Maps Platform and Google Earth to help developers and city planners use the latest location data for creating apps and planning urban spaces.
For developers, Google Maps Platform now offers “Grounding with Google Maps.” This new feature lets developers use real-time data from over 250 million locations to power AI-driven applications.
For example, a rental website could show users nearby fitness options or businesses, displaying up-to-date details like business hours and reviews for more informed choices. Google says over 10 million websites use its Google Maps Platform, and this new generative AI feature is available today.
For EV drivers, Google is rolling out AI-generated place summaries in Rivian’s infotainment systems, starting in November. This feature will give quick insights into nearby restaurants, shops, and supermarkets right on the vehicle’s screen.
Urban planners will also benefit from Google’s updates. A new Gemini-powered tool in Google Earth allows planners to ask for specific location-based data to help make decisions. For example, city planners looking to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure could ask Google Earth to highlight the five zip codes with the fewest EV chargers or locate areas without EV chargers near shopping centers or hotels.
The Gemini tools in Google Earth are set to roll out in a pilot program next month. Google says these updates will allow developers and planners to work more efficiently with real-world data, explained Yael Maguire, VP & GM, Google Maps Platform & Google Earth.
