OpenAI Unleashes ChatGPT Search to Take on Google

OpenAI has taken a significant leap forward by integrating enhanced web search functionality into ChatGPT, positioning it as a competitor to traditional search engines like Google.

ChatGPT Search

The new web search feature allows ChatGPT to automatically search the internet based on the user’s query or upon manual activation by clicking a designated web search icon.

This upgrade is available across multiple platforms, including the official ChatGPT website, desktop applications, and mobile apps. As of now, users with ChatGPT Plus and Team subscriptions, as well as those on the SearchGPT waitlist, have immediate access to this feature.

OpenAI plans to extend this functionality to Enterprise and Education users in the coming weeks, with a broader rollout for Free users set to follow in the coming months.

Before this enhancement, finding reliable and precise answers online often required multiple search queries and sifting through several websites. ChatGPT now aims to simplify that process by understanding the user’s question in a conversational format, performing relevant searches, and delivering well-rounded answers sourced directly from the web.

In addition to more advanced search capabilities, OpenAI has partnered with data and news providers to ensure that ChatGPT delivers up-to-date information across several categories.

An especially helpful aspect of the new system is the ability to click on linked sources, such as articles or blog posts, which appear within the chat. This feature provides users with a quick and easy way to verify the information or dive deeper into specific topics.

Currently, users with a ChatGPT Plus or Team subscription can test out the enhanced search capabilities by visiting chatgpt.com or using the desktop and mobile apps.

The company aims to integrate this search feature into other platforms, such as voice assistants and visual canvases, allowing for a more immersive and accessible search experience.
