Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Breaks Records, Franchise Hits 500 Million Sales
The Call of Duty franchise has reached a monumental milestone, selling over 500 million copies globally, according to its publisher, Activision-Blizzard (via The Washington Post).

The achievement is further amplified by the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which broke records on its first day of release.
This major development marks the first entry in the COD franchise under Microsoft’s ownership, following its $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. The deal has significantly boosted Microsoft’s earnings, contributing to a 61% revenue increase for the Xbox division during Q1.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, shared these details in a recent earnings call, highlighting the incredible success of Black Ops 6, which has become the biggest launch in Call of Duty history.
“Our strategy is to meet gamers where they are,” said Nadella, referencing the company’s approach to making games accessible across multiple platforms and devices. Amy Hood, Microsoft’s chief financial officer, mentioned that the Game Pass model ensures recurring revenue streams.
One of the most notable shifts with Black Ops 6 is its availability on Xbox Game Pass. Under this new distribution model, Game Pass subscribers can play the game without the typical $70 price tag associated with major releases.

Big-budget games like Black Ops 6 often come with production costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet, Activision seems confident in the strategy.
Time will tell if this move boosts Game Pass subscriptions, which had plateaued at around 34 million monthly subscribers. Despite this significant number, many industry analysts believe the service needs even larger titles to attract new subscribers.
