Xbox is hosting its annual summer Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, June 9th in Los Angeles. As its summer keynote concludes, it’ll roll directly into its Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct, offering the worldwide reveal of the game.
The Xbox Games Showcase was previously announced earlier this year and was confirmed to be the “first Showcase featuring games from our portfolio of studios across Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda and Xbox Game Studios.” The event will span upcoming first-party titles from the Xbox umbrella of studios as well as third-party partners.
There are several games already slated to release later this year. This means the likelihood of them appearing during the Xbox Games Showcase is relatively high. In the second half of 2024, players can look forward to the releases of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Avowed, Ara: History Untold, and Towerborne –– barring any sudden delays. Plus, there is the recently announced Starfield Shattered Space DLC from Bethesda Game Studios that’ll likely be shown in full and given a launch date. On the topic of expansions, the Diablo 4 Vessel of Hatred DLC is slated for “late 2024” so I hope to fill my bingo card with this one as well.
On top of that, all eyes are on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the first game in the franchise to be published by Microsoft following the Activision Blizzard acquisition. In May, Treyarch dropped the first full trailer of the game, which confirms that the game revolves around the Gulf War conflict in the 1990s. The game is also confirmed to be launching later this year on Xbox Game Pass.
We all love to speculate ahead of these large Xbox showcases. Microsoft has a handful of previously announced games that could make their way into the show. This includes the highly-anticipated Perfect Dark reboot, co-developed by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics. Additionally, it’ll be interesting if games like Fable, Everwild, State of Decay 3, or Contraband show up. Also, fans have been clamouring for more Gears of War. Could Gears 6 be announced by The Coalition? Only time will tell.
Outside of announcements, it’ll be very interesting to see how Xbox frames its upcoming releases. Earlier this year, Xbox began its new initiative to release select games on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. This included Sea of Thieves, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Grounded. Reports claim that this trend will continue with additional waves slated for the future. Following its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it’s safe to say Microsoft will look at all avenues to recoup its costs and improve its margins across software. This could likely mean additional Xbox games could make their way to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch this year.
The Xbox Games Showcase begins at 1PM ET/ 10AM PT. The double feature will be live-streamed across YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.
