OpenAI Set to Launch ‘Operator’ AI Agent to Automate User Tasks
OpenAI is gearing up to release a powerful new artificial intelligence tool, codenamed “Operator,” designed to automate complex tasks on behalf of users, Bloomberg is reporing.

Set to debut in January, this AI agent is expected to be capable of performing multi-step operations such as writing code, booking travel, and other tasks that typically require direct user intervention.
According to sources familiar with OpenAI’s internal discussions, the tool will be released as part of a research preview and made accessible to developers through the company’s API.
The introduction of “Operator” is part of a broader strategy to integrate AI more deeply into everyday workflows. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hinted at this shift in focus, suggesting that while AI models continue to improve, the real breakthrough will come when autonomous agents can carry out complex tasks for users efficiently and accurately.
OpenAI is not the only company making strides in this space. Anthropic, another AI firm, has already unveiled an AI agent capable of processing activities happening on a user’s computer in real-time and taking appropriate actions.
Similarly, OpenAI’s major backer, Microsoft, has launched its own set of agent tools aimed at automating tasks such as sending emails and managing records for business professionals. Even Google, under its parent company Alphabet Inc., is rumored to be working on an AI agent.

For individual users, AI agents like “Operator” could automate mundane tasks, freeing up time for more critical or creative work. For businesses, this means streamlining processes, improving efficiency, and reducing the workload on employees who might otherwise spend hours on repetitive tasks.
In addition to its core task automation abilities, “Operator” will likely integrate seamlessly into OpenAI’s existing ecosystem, further expanding the company’s offerings in AI-driven productivity.
