Uber Taps Canadian Gig Workers for AI Data Labeling Projects
Through its new ‘Scaled Solutions’ division, Uber is expanding its AI initiatives to include Canadian gig workers, offering new opportunities in the growing field of artificial intelligence (via Bloomberg).

Uber has begun recruiting independent contractors in Canada to assist with AI data labeling, training, and testing. The company is also onboarding freelancers from the U.S., India, Poland, and Nicaragua. Pay is task-based, with monthly payouts.
The Scaled Solutions initiative focuses on providing AI training and data labeling services to external clients, including companies like Aurora Innovation, which develops autonomous driving software, and Niantic, known for its augmented reality games like Pokémon Go.
The new venture aligns with the rising demand for high-quality datasets to train AI models. Competitors such as Scale AI have already demonstrated the lucrative potential of this field, with valuations reaching $14 billion.
The company is also seeking corporate account managers to oversee relationships with enterprise clients in cities such as San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. Despite its ambitions, the company has not disclosed details about revenue, client numbers, or project pricing for Scaled Solutions.
While Uber is entering a promising market, the data annotation industry has faced criticism for underpaying workers, particularly in developing countries. Comparable platforms like Remotasks have been scrutinized for low wages, despite claims of offering competitive rates.

Uber’s ability to scale its AI workforce in Canada and other countries will depend on how well it balances competitive pay with profitability. By tapping into AI expertise, the company has the potential to redefine its gig-economy model and attract a more specialized workforce.
