PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 93.7 Million Units Despite Sales Slump in Q4

Sony has reported that 93.7 million PlayStation 5 units have shipped since launch. As part of its most recent fourth fiscal quarter, the company sold 1.5 million units.
Sales of the PlayStation 5 have steeply declined, dropping 46 percent year-over-year, according to the company. The company cites “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” as the reason for two price increases on PlayStation 5 hardware over the past year. As of April 2, Sony raised the entry-level PlayStation 5 with a disc drive to $819.99. The high-end PlayStation 5 Pro now costs $1,099.99.
“We plan to base our PS5 hardware sales in FY26 on the volume of memory we can procure at reasonable prices and we expect hardware profitability to be essentially the same as FY25,” Sony says. The company now forecasts annual gaming revenue will drop 6 percent. However, these forecasts could be further affected as the global memory shortage continues.
Sony also reported a $765 million impairment charge related to Bungie, which the company acquired in 2022 for $3.6 billion. The development house behind Destiny 2 and Marathon has been affected by layoffs, which have impacted hundreds of employees. PlayStation was also forced to delay Marathon last year after a lukewarm alpha test.
When asked about the idea of PlayStation 6, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said that no decision has been made on when the console may release or how much it will cost. According to VGC, the company is still weighing its options as the component shortage is ongoing. Much like Nintendo, Xbox and other manufacturers, Sony has also been affected by inflated costs due to RAM shortages.
As for software and services, 74.6 million games have been sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. Sony reports 5.8 million first-party games sold across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Software sales changed little, down only 0.1 percent year-over-year. Sony also reveals 125 million monthly active users are on the PlayStation Network, up 1 million from a year ago.
