Google Pledges 2 Extra Years of OS Updates for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 Device

Google has announced its plans to extend the delivery of OS updates to Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold devices by two years. Originally, devices in the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold were to have three years of OS support, starting from their respective launch dates.

The company recently confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) this week. With the extended allotment of support, Google is pledging that all users across these devices will remain at parity with contemporary flagship models for a total of five years. “This extended support will total five years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US,” the company reveals.

This latest change is also reflected on the support page on the Pixel Phone Help site. The site provides a bit more context to what users can expect to receive in the five total years. Google confirms that alongside OS updates, Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold will continue to receive security updates. It may also “include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.”

Even with the extension, the support for Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold does pale in comparison to Pixel 8 and Pixel 9. Google has been firm on providing a whopping seven years of OS support for its latest flagship devices. This was in part due to comparisons being made when Samsung declared four years of software updates for Galaxy S22. In an effort to remain competitive, Google went a few steps further, raising the bar to seven years.

Had Google not changed its mind, 2024 would be the final year of updates for Pixel 6. Upon the release of Android 15, Pixel 6 users would soon be left behind. However, as the Android 16 beta began to trickle onto devices, the Pixel 6 was being mysteriously supported. Now we have our answer and users will likely be elated as Pixel 6 will support Android 16 and Android 17 when they’re made available. Pixel 7, on the other hand, will be cleared up until Android 18.
