Google and Samsung Launch Android XR for Headsets, Smart Glasses

Google has unveiled Android XR, an operating system designed to support the next era of immersive technologies, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).

Developed in partnership with Samsung, Android XR integrates years of advancements in AI and spatial computing. The platform offers tools like ARCore, Unity, and OpenXR to developers, encouraging innovation across headsets and smart glasses.

The first product under this initiative is Samsung’s Project Moohan, an XR headset debuting in 2024. With features like Passthrough for real-world visibility and Gemini AI for interactive control, this headset promises a seamless blend of virtual and real-world experiences.

Users can enjoy immersive versions of apps like Google Maps, YouTube, and Photos, along with multitasking through virtual screens on Chrome.

Android XR extends to smart glasses, enhancing daily activities with navigation, translations, and real-time alerts. These glasses aim to integrate stylish designs and compatibility with Android devices, powered by Gemini’s AI assistance. Google is also conducting real-world tests to refine privacy features and usability for these glasses.

For developers, Android XR offers a unified platform to create immersive content. The platform emphasizes compatibility with existing Android apps while opening possibilities for XR-specific innovations. Google’s partnership with companies like Qualcomm, Magic Leap, and Sony will further ensure diverse hardware support.
