All iPhone 17 Models to Receive ProMotion Support, According to Report

The entire iPhone 17 series is believed to be getting support for Apple’s ProMotion technology. According to a recent report from 9to5Mac, Apple will be expanding its ProMotion support beyond its Pro series models.

Apple’s ProMotion support is currently locked to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Considered a high-end feature, it may only be a matter of time until all iPhone models this year gain access to the enhanced display technology. Sources from within Apple’s supply chain have corroborated earlier reports from this year.

According to Weibo-based Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, supply chain materials claim that the higher refresh rate display technology will be supported on standard iPhone 17 models. The leak didn’t go on to confirm whether this meant full 120Hz support or not, however. On iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple’s ProMotion enables the use of 120Hz.

It’s claimed that Apple will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels across all iPhone 17 models. With excellent power efficiency, all iPhone 17 displays will be able to support ProMotion. Currently, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus leverage low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels. This display panel is only able to offer up to 60Hz.

ProMotion technology supports variable refresh rates from 1Hz all the way up to 120Hz. The power efficiency also better supports always-on functions including always-on time, notifications, and widgets with practically no hit to the battery life. When the iPhone utilizes the full 120Hz, scrolling, playing video content and games all look much smoother than when capped at 60Hz.

There’s of course no official word from Apple. iPhone 17 isn’t expected to be revealed until later in 2025. As is tradition, the new series likely won’t be unveiled until September.
