Squid Game Season 2 Garners Record Breaking 68 Million Views in its Premiere Week

It’s been revealed that Netflix’s second season of Squid Game has already become a bonafide success. Since premiering on the streaming service on Thursday, December 26th, 2024, Squid Game Season 2 has received 68 million global views.

As first reported by IndieWire, the follow-up season of Squid Game broke Netflix records by achieving such a viewership total in its debut week. Wednesday previously set the record, earning 50.1 million views during its debut week in 2022. Season 2 of Squid Game has also risen to popularity that it’s now the seventh entry on Netflix’s All-Time popular list for Non-English language shows.

With all of this in mind, Squid Game Season 2 still hasn’t outranked the first season by any glaring metric. The first season continues to be Netflix’s biggest series of all time, regardless of looking at English or international properties. After premiering on September 17th, 2021, the first season spent 24 weeks in the Global Top 10 list. Squid Game remained in the Top 10 for 19 straight weeks all the way into January 2022. It also garnered a space within the Top 10 list this week with an additional 8.1 million views.

Squid Game became a viral sensation for all intents and purposes back in 2021. Thanks to word of mouth, viewership slowly caught on during its second week on Netflix. Within the first week, Netflix saw 448 million viewing hours. This rose to the series finding 265.2 million views globally and 2.2 billion viewing hours during the first 90 days on the platform. It’s still too early to see how the latest season will compare.

The second season of Squid Game is once again helmed by creator, writer, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk. The season is a direct continuation of the store of the secret game content in which 456 willing contestants play a series of childhood games with a deadly spin. To win a chance to walk away with a 45.6 billion won (around 44.5 million CAD) prize, contestants put their lives on the line with Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, in the spotlight of the series.

This latest season of Squid Game has a condensed length to its run. Rather than nine episodes, the second season only has seven episodes, each ranging from around an hour and over. The third and final season of Squid Game is said to arrive sometime in 2025.
