Eve Light Switch Review: Automation Made Easy with Apple HomeKit

The Eve Light Switch is an excellent addition to a smart home, especially if you’re already using Apple HomeKit. Eve sent us their latest switch to check out.

The switch also supports Samsung SmartThings, Alexa and Google Home. Only HomeKit lets you use built-in schedules, see time and duration stats and adjust the status LED on this switch, which is built on Thread tech and also supports Matter.

We tested it with an Apple TV 4K serving as the home hub, and the integration was seamless, making it easy to control lighting from anywhere. It’s also easy and crucial for setting up automations, such as for our outdoor front door light.

One of the highlights of the Eve Light Switch is its simple installation for single-pole or 3-way circuits, allowing it to work with existing setups without replacing bulbs. It offers control via the Home app or Siri, enabling voice commands like “Turn on the living room lights.” We were able to install this ourselves (yes, we turned off the power beforehand).

You can also automate lighting schedules or set them to respond to presence detection, such as turning off lights when no one is home. The Eve Light Switch comes with a single wall plate, which we skipped as we integrated it into our 3-switch panel.

Performance-wise, Thread makes the switch highly responsive and reliable. Unlike Wi-Fi-based switches, the Eve Light Switch acts as a router node, boosting the stability of the entire smart home network. There’s no cloud dependency or tracking, ensuring all operations remain local to your home, which means it’s super private.

While the lack of dimming functionality may disappoint some, the Eve Light Switch excels in offering straightforward on/off control with automation options that simplify daily routines. This time around, the green LED is much brighter than before compared to an older Eve Light Switch we had, which was a green circular LED in the middle that was quite dim.

Speaking of our original Eve Light Switch, an iOS 18 update screwed up the HomeKit automation completely. We couldn’t reset the switch as we lost the HomeKit code. Pro tip: stick the HomeKit QR code to the back of the wall plate.

Yes, we installed ours with the LED on the bottom based on the tight squeeze into the rear panel box. It doesn’t affect the touch operation of turning the switch on and off.

With our outdoor outlet tied to our front door light switch, the Eve Light Switch also automated the turning on/off of our Christmas lights with HomeKit, starting at sunrise and then turning off after four hours.

The Eve Light Switch costs $79.95 and is one easy way to set up automation for a switch that doesn’t require dimming.
