A new mobile app is offering first responders a safe and anonymous way to access mental health support.

The IGYB911 app was created by the #IVEGOTYOURBACK911 campaign, founded by Elgin County, Ontario-based paramedics Shawn Taylor and Jill Foster in 2014. The campaign was created to support paramedics, police, fire, emergency telecommunications, nurses, corrections and military personnel.

The app builds on the campaign’s mission to raise awareness and provide resources for first responders dealing with mental health challenges. “It was the next step in what we do,” said Taylor, who has been a paramedic for 15 years, to CBC News.

The national campaign has already raised and donated nearly $1 million through merchandise sales to support mental health initiatives for first responders. With the launch of IGYB911, Taylor says they’re now offering help “at the street level.” The app was developed in partnership with a tech company to provide immediate, anonymous support.

First responders can download the app and use a generic community code provided by #IVEGOTYOURBACK911 to connect with resources. Users can access internal peer support teams or external organizations like Boots on the Ground.

Taylor emphasized the importance of anonymity in addressing mental health needs in the first responder community. “There’s still stigma in our industry around asking for help,” he said. “Anonymity allows people to feel comfortable reaching out.”

The app is designed to make reaching out for help as easy and confidential as possible, ensuring those who serve on the front lines get the support they need. The IGYB911 app is available in the App Store and Google Play.
