Apple Moves Veteran Exec to Fix Siri, Revamp AI Efforts: Report

Apple is making big changes to improve Siri and its artificial intelligence efforts, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Kim Vorrath, a company veteran with 36 years at Apple, has been moved to the AI and machine learning team, reporting to AI chief John Giannandrea. Vorrath is known for handling tough projects like the original iPhone software and the Vision Pro headset.

An unnamed longtime Apple executive said the move means AI is now seen as the biggest challenge at Apple, even more than its pricey Vision Pro.

This move hints that Apple is finally treating AI and Apple Intelligence as a top priority, with Siri needing a serious upgrade to compete with rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google, and Samsung.

Apple is now working to fix these problems, with plans to release a better Siri in iOS 18.4 by April 2024. However, some bigger upgrades, like a conversational version of Siri that rivals ChatGPT, won’t be ready until at least 2026.

Vorrath is expected to bring discipline and structure, just as she did when managing other high-profile Apple projects.

Seeing really is believing. Apple had its chance with Siri and many don’t have high hopes on what’s to come. You can never count Apple out, however by now, everyone’s patience is wearing thing on waiting for Siri to become great again.

What do you think? Will Apple be able to turn Siri around to compete against the likes of ChatGPT?

Speak for yourself. We use it in our home to interact with our smart home setup.

I use Siri too but not a lot. Mostly, I tell it to send a one line text message to my loved ones when I'm driving.
I did try to use it while under the shower to skip a track or change the volume but, because of the noise of the shower, it's a hit or miss.

I don't have the new AI capable iphone, and just use ChatGPT for almost everything. I have also been trying Gemini too. Apple has a lot of catching up to do, missing out on AI big time.
