Goodbye Old Siri: Apple’s Planned AI Overhaul Changes Everything

Apple is reportedly working on a major upgrade to Siri, aiming to make the digital assistant more conversational and advanced, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

This new version, dubbed “LLM Siri,” will use large language models (LLMs), similar to the technology behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

The new Siri will allow for back-and-forth conversations and handle more complex tasks faster than before. Apple has been testing the upgraded assistant on iPhones, iPads, and Macs as a standalone app, but it’s expected to replace the current Siri interface as early as spring 2026, say people familiar with the matter.

The update will likely be part of iOS 19 and macOS 16, which are internally named “Luck” and “Cheer”, according to sources speaking to Gurman.

Siri, now 13 years old, has long been criticized for lagging behind rivals like ChatGPT and Google Assistant in conversational abilities and task management. For years, Siri has struggled with even basic commands, often frustrating users with its limited capabilities.

For anyone that has used ChatGPT or Gemini, the advancements in conversational AI are truly incredible. Siri is so far behind, but this upgrade looks to change that, if and when it is released.

Apple plans to announce the new Siri in 2025, with a public release expected in 2026. While these dates could shift, the new assistant is positioned as a significant part of Apple’s AI strategy.

This overhaul marks a long-overdue step for Apple, which has been slow to innovate with Siri since its debut on the iPhone 4S. Critics argue that Apple’s late entry into advanced AI-powered assistants highlights years of missed opportunities in the rapidly growing AI market. If Apple succeeds, LLM Siri could finally make the voice assistant great again.

So Apple plan to have Siri to be like ChatGPT but not till 2026? They will need 'luck' and 'cheer' to catch up to ChatGPT.
