Meta AI Tracks Canadians on Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp

Don’t you hate it when your partner forgets you don’t like pickles on your burger even though you told them so six weeks ago? Well, that’s one area where Meta’s AI chatbot might have your partner beat since it’s getting a “memory” to help it remember important details about you.

Meta today announced new features coming to Meta AI in Canada and the U.S. that will help provide personalized information and recommendations to users. One of these new features commits certain things you tell Meta AI during one-on-one conversations in WhatsApp or Messenger to the chatbot’s memory.

Meta AI will use details stored in its memory to inform future responses and tailor things like entertainment suggestions, recipe recommendations, and more to your preferences. “You can tell Meta AI to remember certain things about you (like that you love to travel and learn new language), and it can also pick up important details based on context,” Meta explained in a blog post.

“For example, let’s say you’re hungry for breakfast and ask Meta AI for some ideas. It suggests an omelette or a fancy frittata, and you respond in the chat to let Meta AI know that you’re a vegan. Meta AI can remember that information and use it to inform future recipe recommendations.”

According to Meta, the feature excludes group chats and you can erase Meta AI’s memory at any time. To delete Meta AI’s memory, tap on the View button when you see a “Memory updated” notification in a conversation with Meta AI on Messenger or WhatsApp (or find the memory section in Settings), select the details you want to delete — or simply tap on Select All — and then tap on Delete.

Meta said it has been rolling this feature out to Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp for iOS and Android since late last year. It is currently only available in Canada and the U.S.

Meta AI is also getting increased personalization across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. The chatbot will be able to use information from your Facebook or Instagram profile, such as your listed location and your recently watched Reels, alongside details from its memory to deliver bespoke content recommendations and responses with information that’s relevant to you.

“Let’s say you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this weekend and you ask Meta AI to suggest something. Based on the home location you’ve listed as part of your Facebook profile, recent views of reels featuring live performances by various country artists and its memory that you have a partner and two young kids, Meta AI might suggest tickets for that weekend’s country music show at your local arena and reservations at a local brunch spot,” Meta said.

Meta AI has enjoyed significant success since its release last year, hitting 600 million active monthly users as of December. The company is firing on all cylinders with its AI efforts, and it doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. Meta recently revealed plans to spend $65 billion USD on driving its AI efforts this year.

Yup. Seems to be a very obvious “story”.

“Breaking news: google and Facebook tracked and harvest every single thing they can about everything you do. Here’s there new excuse – AI”.

Allow me to be skeptical about the real intent of know me better…pretty sure Zuckerbot is not looking for a friend but for information he can monetize. So fk META.
Why don't we have an act that codifies into law what can and cannot be collected and allows ordinary people to have ALL their information wiped out should they wish so.

….because the business model would collapse and so would campaign contributions and lobbying.
