Freeland Wants to Slap 100% Tariff on Teslas in Trump Pushback

Canadian MP and former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, says she’s ready to fight back again U.S. tariffs from President Donald Trump.

Freeland is currently running for the Liberal leadership race, in a bid to become Prime Minister. On Friday, she said if Trump’s tariffs come on February 1, she wants to push back with 100% tariffs on Tesla (via Tesla North).

“If Donald Trump slaps 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, we must hit back—dollar for dollar—starting with 100% tariffs on all Tesla vehicles and U.S. wine, beer, and spirits. We must protect Canadian workers and businesses,” said Freeland on Friday.

Not sure why she’s singling out Tesla, as there are also other U.S. automakers that sell vehicles here. Maybe it’s one way to slap back at Trump and Elon Musk, who’s working alongside the President?

Tesla vehicles are very popular in Canada and starting tomorrow, the automaker is increasing prices by up to $9,000, due to foreign exchange rates.

Freeland has touted a carbon tax for nearly a decade in Canada. But now she wants to slap a tariff on the most popular EV automaker. Seems somewhat hypocritical. Let’s wait and see what happens February 1, as Trump has said the tariffs are coming against Canada and Mexico, plus China (10%).

“Not sure why she’s singling out Tesla”
-Because musk is associated with Trump.

But, to go after a single company only because of who the owner is will open us up to lawsuits and we’d end up losing and paying for their losses.

I just think it’s petty. How about car makers that are made in USA, but aren’t integrated into the NA supply chain or something.

That’s better idea. Not sure how many that actually would be.

Either they’re integrated and the tariffs would hurt our manufacturing or they aren’t and they are so small as to be irrelevant.

Freeland’s idea is petty. Petty and worse than useless theatre. She’s too smart to have thought that was a good idea. Someone is putting very bad ideas in her head.

I think you can see with your own eyes the incompetence and ineptitude displayed by lieberals/Endeepee and by populist premiers like Ford.
None of them takes a step back to determine the feasibility of such proposals, the impact on Canadians, etc.
The fact that the only solution they have (as always) is to print money (in a recession!) because…"trump pandemic" is all you need to know.

Nobody says we should roll over and die, but a dose of realism is absolutely required and we're not getting it today as all these clowns only think of their elections.

America got us by the ballz because of the idiotic decisions to virtue signal and block any investment in our resources, pipelines, to reduce the dependence on US, etc. You know all that, you have been living it for 10 years.

There is an old joke about the mouse fighting the elephant and ending under his foot. Some guy walking by tries to help the mouse who furiously screams "stay away, I got him exactly where I wanted"

That's us now with the stupid pronouncements from people that don't even buy their own groceries.

We can't roll over. As I'm sure you have already heard the analogy of the bully having his way with you and if you don't retaliate, you got more of the same coming your way.

I doubt many of these threatened tariffs are coming and this is Trump just sabre rattling as you got to believe there is some commonsense thinking somewhere in that administration.

Having said that, I think this is a wake-up call for our country to start acting like an independent country and to stop kissing the collective rearend of the USA as so many of us do. Our entertainment, news, vacationing etc all American.
I got family members who don't know squat about Canadian politics but can go into fine detail about the American's.

Maybe its time to start trading with more countries. The very thought of us getting "sucker punched" by an American egotist is somewhat disturbing seeing we have been allies for centuries.

ABSOLUTELY not advocating for being a doormat for Trump. But our leaders are as smart as he is: ignorant and petty.

Do Canadians remember Turd-eau talking on a hot mike behind Trumpet? With Macaroni and Schultz?
The orange man didn’t forget.
His vendetta with Canada is personal, triggered by a black-face-donning-playboy with the IQ of an oyster.

Can’t go “tit for tat” if you want to have gasoline at the pump and tomatoes in the store.
You have to stop the 500Bn investments flowing to US by attracting that money towards the Canadian economy.
Tariffs won’t solve anything, we the common folk will just pay more if we want to eat and drive.

Pre-pubescent politicians make bombastic statements for the media…not because it will scare the orange monkey.

Not really allies for centuries. Not always allies and not for centuries. Canada didn’t exit that long. And in the War of 1812, it was 1816 when the British troops occupied Washington and burned the White House. The USA, with the exception of the early year since its inception, always was a belligerent nation, never shy to flex their power but rarely would turn on its closest neighbours, friends and eventually allies. Until this president.

Yeah you're right, centuries may be hyperbolic.

However in our generation and the couple before us, USA was never considered a threat in any way other than high currency exchange and "stealing" the NHL away from us.

This shows you the leaders of this country are idiots and unaware of the import Tariffs.
The majority of Tesla's are already covered under Tariff's because the majority of them, (model3 and Y) are manufactured in China for Canadian consumption.

So instead of making Canadian products more affordable through Canadian subsidies, all three major party leaders think it's a better idea to make Canadians pay more for products that provide choice and affordability to Canadians?

Why can't we focus more on NOT selling to Americans by diversifying our marketplace and less on charging Canadians more? Just don't tax 100% Canadian made products and let the free market do it's thing instead of making your own voters suffer.

Things don’t work that way. It is not so black and white. The government needs to do both – put a tax on exporting to the US.

Another strong reason not to ever vote Liberal. I would need you all to breath and calm down, and then start negotiating. This is what competent governments do.
I will never buy a EV, but really, 100%. Do you realize that you have been pushing the global warming/EV mandate for 9 years???

This is a great idea. Trump and MAGA billionaire's respond very strongly to actions that impact their bottom line. Rather than punishing the entire country's exports, target his billionaire backers who will force him to reconsider
