Ex-Apple Engineer Apologizes After Settling Lawsuit Over Leaks
Apple has settled its lawsuit against former iOS software engineer Andrew Aude, who was accused of leaking confidential company information to the media (via 9to5Mac).

The case, filed in March 2024, was dismissed following a settlement, with Aude issuing a public apology acknowledging his misconduct.
Andrew Aude joined Apple in 2016, working on optimizing battery performance for iOS devices. During his tenure, he had access to sensitive information about unreleased products and features. According to court documents, between 2018 and 2023, Aude shared confidential details with journalists from The Wall Street Journal and The Information.
In its lawsuit, Apple alleged that Aude’s actions were deliberate and aimed at undermining products he disagreed with. The company claimed that Aude sent over 1,400 encrypted messages to a journalist referred to as “Homeboy” and more than 10,000 texts to another journalist.
The lawsuit also accused Aude of attempting to destroy evidence. During a November 2023 interview with Apple investigators, Aude allegedly deleted significant amounts of data from his work iPhone, including the Signal app used for his communications with journalists. Following these revelations, Apple terminated Aude’s employment in December 2023.
On February 6, 2025, Aude posted a public apology on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“I spent nearly eight years as a software engineer at Apple. During that time, I was given access to sensitive internal Apple information, including what were then unreleased products and features. But instead of keeping this information secret, I made the mistake of sharing this information with journalists who covered the company. I did not realize it at the time, but this turned out to be a profound and expensive mistake. Hundreds of professional relationships I had spent years building were ruined. And my otherwise successful career as a software engineer was derailed, and it will likely be very difficult to rebuild it. Leaking was not worth it. I sincerely apologize to my former colleagues who not only worked tirelessly on projects for Apple, but work hard to keep them secret. They deserved better.”
The specific terms of the settlement between Apple and Aude remain confidential. However, legal experts suggest that the public apology was likely a condition of the agreement.

Apple has a history of taking legal action against employees and third parties who leak confidential information. The company argues that unauthorized disclosures can diminish the excitement surrounding new product launches and provide competitors with unfair advantages.
