Apple TV has a new big-budget action comedy to kick off September, with Mayday starring Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh now available to stream.

Set during the Cold War in 1987, Mayday stars Reynolds as U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly. After a top-secret mission into Soviet territory goes sideways, Kelly finds himself stranded behind enemy lines. His unlikely ticket home is Nikolai Ustinov, an eccentric former KGB agent played by Branagh who has developed a fondness for American culture. Naturally, the partnership doesn’t exactly go smoothly.

The movie leans heavily into the buddy action-comedy formula and 1980s nostalgia, including plenty of nods to Top Gun. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein even secured Tom Cruise’s cooperation to incorporate references to the 1986 film. Daley and Goldstein co-wrote and directed Mayday. The pair previously worked together on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming. The supporting cast includes Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, David Morse and Wendy Crewson. Reynolds also serves as an executive producer.

Mayday was shot in Montreal back in 2024 under the working title Blackbird. Apple Studios, Skydance Media, and Reynolds’s Maximum Effort production company produced the film.

The movie joins a growing Apple Original Films catalogue that includes F1: The Movie, which became Apple’s biggest theatrical success before arriving on Apple TV. The Brad Pitt-led film subsequently picked up an Academy Award for Best Sound earlier this year. Apple TV is now home to over 300 films and TV series to stream with a subscription. Apple has also recently expanded what subscribers can watch beyond its originals, adding a rotating collection of popular studio movies to Apple TV in Canada.

Mayday is available to stream in Canada starting today. Apple TV costs $14.99 CAD per month with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers.
