Apple Maps ‘Gulf of America’ is Here: What it Looks Like in Canada

Following in the footsteps of Google Maps yesterday, Apple has now renamed the Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’, ensuring consistency based on the official update by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed on Inauguration Day, made the change to reflect the Gulf’s importance to the U.S. economically and strategically. The U.S. only controls 12 nautical miles (22.2 km or 13.8 miles) from shore, then it’s international waters.
Apple told Bloomberg the change is rolling out for U.S. users first, then globally later. But as we can see below, the change is already live for some Apple Maps users in the United States:
The Gulf of America shows as the Gulf of Mexico for US Apple Maps users still but if you tap the gulf in Apple Maps it shows as Gulf of America now. Must be a caching issue that it doesn’t show up at first. https://t.co/GSVYTiKmFz

For those in Canada, Apple Maps still shows Gulf of Mexico, even when you tap it or use a VPN and change your location to the USA. So nothing has changed yet but Apple says updates are coming.
Other mapping services like Microsoft’s Bing Maps and MapQuest have yet to make the ‘Gulf of America’ change, but it will likely be coming soon.
