Rogers and Fido Price Increase: Connection Fee Surges to $75
Rogers and Fido have increased their connection fees, yet again, a 7% increase at a time when net profits are soaring.
Both websites of Rogers and Fido are showing a $75 setup service fee as of today. Previously, this was $70. The price increase comes at a time when the U.S. has launched a tariff war that will affect Canada, the latest being 25% on all steel and aluminum imports.
The wireless carriers will say that this connection fee is waived when you buy online and skip interactions with humans in a store. But still, anyone renewing or buying a phone will now need to pay $75. That’s like being charged an extra month of service.
Just seven months ago this connection fee was increased to $70, up from $60.
As of writing, Telus and Bell have yet to increase their connection fees to match Rogers, but we know our telecoms follow each other closely, so be prepared for higher fees across the board. Last year, Telus and Koodo increased its connection fee to match Rogers and Fido one month later. Bell and Virgin Plus matched their rivals a few months later.
Quebecor’s Freedom Mobile still has its connection fee at $45.

This needs regulation… it is the number 1 reason people I talk to avoid switching carriers. Plan is cheaper sure, but people struggle to swallow several hundred dollars of connection fees to move their family to a new carrier, even if it is cheaper in the long run.
Who are the people you talk to? Lol You can get around those fees EASILY. If that's the #1 reason they aren't switching I imagine 2 and 3 aren't convincing either.
I mean my own experience. Family. Friends. The fees don’t always get waived. Often at best theyre credited over time.
"But still, anyone renewing or buying a phone will now need to pay $75." That's not true. It's clear that you don't have to pay the $75 if you do it online. There is no reason to talk to anyone to activate a new phone.
When I got my s23 i did it online. no fees! The fee is only if you don't do it online. Why there is even a fee for someone to click a button is beyond me at this stage in the internet age.
That is still the case. The article contradicts itself.
For black Friday deals you do need to do it in person to get the gift cards and other side offers.
They are not talking about Black Friday. Also, there were many offers then to waive the connection fee.
It's like they don't want subscribers. And what's the point of their stores if it's more expensive for potential subscribers to use them? Plus, most end up having to call in to connect you anyway.
If a retail outlet can't give you the same deal offered on the Company's website, walk away. Chances are pretty good they'll find a 'deal' to keep you there.
Canada needs 'Junk Fee' regulation and fast.
