Don’t Expect Thousands of Rogers Employees to Take the Buyout: Analyst

Smartphone on a desk shows a red Rogers logo on screen, with a keyboard, headphones, and illuminated PC in the background.
Rogers is offering voluntary buyout packages to nearly half its workforce, but analysts aren’t expecting a stampede for the exits. Despite the eye-catching numbers, most experts think the actual departures will be a lot more modest.

National Bank analyst Adam Shine is one of them. In a note to clients cited by the Financial Post, he called the idea that up to 11,000 employees might leave pretty unlikely. Rogers has done this kind of thing before, and the real uptake has always been much lower than the headlines imply. About 10,000 employees are eligible, not counting Sportsnet and Blue Jays staff or anyone in a union. Essentially, the buyouts will skip over the 3,000 or so employees within MLSE.

According to a 2025 Mercer report, Canadian companies running these programs typically see around 10 per cent of eligible staff actually take the deal. Shaw’s 2018 buyout was a rare exception, with a whopping 51 per cent saying yes, but Shine says Rogers’ current offer is more restrictive, so a repeat seems unlikely.

It’s all part of Rogers trimming $800 million in capital spending this year. And they’re not alone either. Telus and Bell have both been cutting headcount for the past couple of years as the whole telecom sector tries to get leaner. Next week we’ll be hearing from both Telus and Bell as they will be reporting their Q1 numbers. Let’s see if there continues to be fallout in the telecom sector when it comes to job cuts.
