Apple Maps Expands Cycling Directions in UK and Ireland

Apple has expanded the coverage for cycling directions within the Apple Maps app. According to a Reddit post, the latest expansion allows users in the UK and Ireland to better map their cycling routes within the app.

As first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s latest expansion for cycling directions better covers the UK and Ireland. While cycling directions has been available in both regions, Apple didn’t provide total coverage. However, according to u/Cmmncw on Reddit, the latest update to Apple Maps now covers the remainder of the UK and Ireland.

With the cycling directions support on Apple Maps, users are able to find path directions for bike lanes, bike paths, and biker-friendly routes within their area. Much like with driving directions, this can offer users travel time, kilometres it’ll take to arrive at their destination and other relevant information.

Cycling directions first launched with iOS 14. Back in 2020, Apple began supporting a handful of global markets. In Canada, cycling directions are sadly limited. Only major cities such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver offer support for cycling directions. Canada is one of the few countries to support cycling directions alongside the US, Australia, China, France, Japan the UK, Ireland and more. A full list can be found on Apple’s website.

Unfortunately, there’s no word from Apple on when cycling directions may expand its coverage in Canada. However, given that the UK and Ireland have received expanded coverage, it’s not out of the question that more areas within Canada could receive support. It’d be a great little boon for those looking to break out the bicycle this spring or summer.
