Netflix Briefly Enabled in Apple TV App Before Being Pulled

Some Apple TV 4K users reported seeing an option to integrate Netflix into the Apple TV app today, allowing Netflix content to show up in the Continue Watching queue and Watchlist.

However, the feature only appeared for users with a U.S. Apple ID, according to FlatpanelsHD. Screenshots shared by the site showed Netflix shows integrated into the Apple TV app, plus settings showed Netflix was an app that was enabled.

Netflix integration into the Apple TV app makes it much easier to continue watching your content, which also includes searches across services.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that this unexpected integration comes after Netflix has resisted joining the Apple TV app for eight years. However, he and colleague Lucas Shaw believe this is likely a glitch, as there is no known agreement between Apple and Netflix.

For now, the integration appears to be short-lived, with no indication that Netflix is officially joining the Apple TV app. Many users on Reddit are saying the integration no longer is working. I don’t think any Canadians saw this integration as we aren’t.

The Apple TV app launched in December 2016 in the U.S. first. At launch, Netflix was not supported and as for reasons why? It was alleged that Netflix didn’t want to share its confidential view usage data.

Besides the lack of Netflix integration, the Apple TV app also doesn’t support other streaming services and platforms such as Plex. But we see integration with other Canadian apps such as Crave, CTV, RiverTV, Telus TV+, Global and more.

I remember when this was DISABLED – I think Netflix got greedy and thought they could monopolize their customers.

I heard a different reason for why Netflix refuses to support. Netflix did at least use to have integration with the universal Siri search and the “watch in” feature (even before the tv app existed). However, they began demanding user data from the Netflix app that Apple found objectionable (having to do with tv specs and watching habits I believe). Since Apple refused to allow this, Netflix pulled out of supporting these features as a petty punishment.
