Amazon has today announced that it will discontinue its Appstore on Android devices and phase out the Amazon Coins program later this year.
The company revealed that, effective August 20, 2025, the Amazon Appstore will no longer be accessible on Android devices. Additionally, as of February 20, 2025, Amazon Coins are no longer available for purchase.
The Amazon Appstore, launched in 2011, served as an alternative to the Google Play Store, offering a selection of apps and games for Android users. Despite its initial promise, the platform struggled to compete with Google’s dominant app marketplace.
In recent years, the Appstore’s presence diminished, and it was eventually removed from the Google Play Store. Users who still have the Appstore installed on their devices will retain access until August 20, 2025. After this date, apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore may continue to function but will no longer receive updates.
It’s important to note that the discontinuation affects only Android devices. The Amazon Appstore will remain available on Amazon’s own Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices, where it serves as the default app marketplace.
The Amazon Coins program, introduced as a virtual currency to purchase apps and in-app items at discounted rates, is also being phased out. As of February 20, 2025, users can no longer purchase new Amazon Coins.
Existing coin balances can still be used for Appstore purchases until August 20, 2025. Any remaining coins in user accounts after this date will be refunded, with additional details concerning refunds to be shared at a later date.
