Meta Ray-Ban Takes Over at Transitions Academy, Highlighting the Future of Smart Glasses

Recently, the 28th annual Transitions Academy was held in Orlando, Florida at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes. The two-day event focused on the leaps and bounds being made in the technology behind transitional lenses. Moreover, this year’s Transitions Academy emphasized how broad the future of Meta Ray-Bans and smart glasses truly is.
For the uninitiated, Transitions Academy is a long-running event, where EssilorLuxottica hosts professionals within the optometry industry. Expert keynotes, panels, and workshops are held to discuss the advancements in transitional lenses and trends that are impacting traditional glasses. However, 2025’s Transitions Academy marked a turning point for EssilorLuxottica. This was the year that smart glasses began driving home its own narrative. One that simply couldn’t be ignored and demanded attention throughout the week.
Now, I’ve been a fan of Meta’ Ray-Ban glasses ever since going hands-on with them in 2024. While I believe it’s still early days for the smart glasses, I do objectively think Meta’s partnership with Ray-Ban has proved to be enough to stir up a conversation revolving around smart glasses. Over the past 12 months, wearables such as Amazon Echo Frames, XReal One, and Viture Pro XR have all become more common among consumers. However, it’s abundantly clear that Meta Ray-Ban has the mind share of the conversation across the market. In the fall of 2024, EssilorLuxottica signed a “long-term” partnership agreement with Meta, to help propel the Ray-Ban smartglasses well into the next decade. During Transition Academy, I got a look at just how fruitful this partnership has become.

During the opening night keynote, Chrystel Barranger, President, EMEA & Asia Professional Solutions & President, Transitions Optical, discussed how smart tech wearables had a discernable future. Speaking to the 1,300+ attendees at Transitions Academy, it was emphasized that a large portion of customers purchasing a new pair of Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses also invested in Transitions Gen S lenses. “What we used to call science fiction is now the norm,” Barranger said during the keynote. Later, during Transitions Academy, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared in a video, underlying the escalation of importance we’ll see in smart glasses. “We believe we’re heading towards a future where glasses replace phones as our go-to mobile device. They’re going to be more intuitive and convenient than our phones today and they’re going to help us stay in the moment even as we use technology to learn, connect and create,’ he said. These combined messages strengthened the idea that smart glasses were finally etching out a spot of their own within the long-establishing optical industry.
On the showroom floor of Transitions Academy, I spoke to Global Head of Marketing Wearables at EssilorLuxottica, Marc Ortiz. Speaking on the convergence between style and technology, Ortiz was able to shed some light on the adoption of Meta Ray-Ban. “Ray-Ban is timeless and a recognizable brand,” Ortiz says. “It’s helping us to strengthen the positioning around innovation because we are identified as timeless. Otherwise, younger generations that are looking for innovation, may say “These guys are dusty,” you know? We are very motivated that way. So, that helps Ray-Ban. You know, glasses are a fashion statement. That’s why we really believe that Ray-Ban will play a crucial role in wearables.
During Transitions Academy, EssilorLuxottica announced the new ‘Color Touch’ lenses, available in. Color Touch offers subtle tints of gradience and washed styles to not only provide protection but also compliment a particular style or outfit. These will join the very impressive Transitions Gen S lenses, offering faster transitions in the sunlight, while also protecting the user’s eyes from harmful sun rays. Transitions Gen S lenses are already on the market and support transitional timing of less than two minutes. With eight total colours options from gray, brown, amethyst, amber, sapphire, ruby, and emerald, Transitions Gen S can pair perfectly no matter your personal aesthetic. Having been using prescription glasses with Gen S lenses in them for the past three weeks, it’s been a remarkable moment of believing in the benefits they offer. No longer am I stuck in my beliefs that transition lenses are something only grandparents wear. However, I’ve yet to test them with Meta Ray-Ban. That being said, I’ve begun to understand why there’s such an aggressive adoption rate for those purchasing Meta’s smart glasses.
“People just want to have one pair [of glasses] that they can wear all day long,” Ortiz explains. “So it will be very uncomfortable for people to have sunglasses and clear [smart glasses]. Two different lenses to be in the home or outdoors. It’s organic. It’s not forced. People want to have that same pair all day long, and that is where Transitions plays a critical role.”

One of the aspects of Transitions’ lenses that had me most curious is the impact they have on technology. While indoors, we’re all well aware of how screens affect our eyes. In many cases, those who wear glasses lean on blue-tinted lenses to diminish the harmful effects of a screen. When outdoors, those who migrate towards the screen not only have to combat the light from their smartphone or laptop but also the sun’s harmful rays. I caught up with Barranger to learn more about the benefits (or drawbacks) Gen S lenses may pose. “It’s super protective because you have the blue light protection and you have the UV protection,” she explains. “It’s the best because as you are exposed [to lighting conditions] when you go in and out, all of that is effortless. It was already the sign that [this technology] belongs to the tech world. It is much more versatile.”
Barranger’s comments ring true. Gen S lenses are so effortless and seamless, you’d almost forget you had them. On average, Gen S technology activates and transitions from clear to tinted in as little as 25 seconds when exposed to UV light. When coming from the outdoors back inside, it takes as long as two minutes to revert back. Transitions’ lenses are considered the fastest photochromic lens on the market. So, with this in mind, it’s understandable to see how this innovation paired with Meta Ray-Ban creates a premium for users. In Canada, Meta Ray-Ban starts at $369. For those looking at Transitions, you’d then see a minimum price tag of $459. That’s also not including your prescription.
I’ve been very cognizant of the growing smart glasses market. While still niche in many ways, I see devices like Meta Ray-Ban becoming more commonplace in cities like Toronto. However, it was witnessing first hand how much engagement smart glasses received at an optical-focused event like Transitions Academy 2025 that really solidified the future that’s in store for this technology. With supplemental pairings with Transitions’ lenses, smart glasses can bridge the gap between style and effective uses of technology. EssilorLuxottica is in a prime position to cater to global audiences with its partnership with Meta over the coming years.
