TikTok Canada: Shutdown Could Undermine $1.4B GDP Contribution
TikTok is warning that the federal government’s decision to shut down its local operations sends the opposite message to businesses considering expansion into Canada.
At the Canada-U.S. Economic Summit last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre both called on investors to “choose Canada” as a destination for business. But according to Joshua Bloom, General Manager of TikTok Canada, recent government actions are driving investment away—with TikTok itself as a prime example.
TikTok Canada has offices in Toronto and Vancouver. The company says it has contributed $1.4 billion to Canada’s GDP, based on a recent Nordicity analysis. TikTok says its operations created hundreds of well-paying jobs in advertising, software development, and the creator economy.
But now, due to government orders to shut down its Canadian operations, those jobs and economic benefits are at risk, wrote Bloom, in an editorial on iPolitics.ca.
While the app itself will remain available in Canada (why ban offices but leave the app still in Canada?), TikTok says the government’s decision means it will have to close its offices and lay off staff. Bloom argues that Canada is isolating itself globally, as other nations, including the United States, work to address security concerns while maintaining the platform’s economic and cultural contributions.
“This order not only jeopardizes TikTok Canada; it sends ripples throughout the tech sector, creating a chilling effect that will deter future investment,” Bloom said.
TikTok says it remains open to working with the government to address security concerns, arguing that having a local presence allows the company to operate under Canadian law, pay Canadian taxes, and support local businesses and creators.
With $600 million of TikTok’s GDP contribution coming in 2024 alone, Bloom says the decision comes at a time when Canada should be reassuring, not deterring investors. What do you think? Should the feds stay the course and shut down TikTok offices in Canada?
