ChatGPT Now Edits Code Directly in Xcode on Mac

OpenAI has introduced a new feature that lets ChatGPT make edits directly in your Integrated Development Environment (IDE), streamlining coding workflows for developers.
The update, now available to Plus, Pro and Team users on macOS, helps speed up routine tasks and tackle complex problems more efficiently.
An engineer from OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop team, explained on Thursday that after launching ChatGPT’s ability to interact with Mac apps last year, one of the most requested features was the ability to edit files directly within an IDE. With millions of developers already using ChatGPT while coding, OpenAI prioritized this functionality for IDEs first.
Now, when users bring up ChatGPT using CMD+Z, it can detect the active editor—such as Xcode—and keep context in one place. Developers can have a conversation with ChatGPT while making edits, like adjusting colours in a design file. With the new auto-apply code feature, ChatGPT can write changes directly into the IDE without requiring manual review, though users can still check and revert edits if needed.
Check out the video demo below–this will make it far easier for developers to make changes to their Xcode projects in real-time, leveraging the power of AI:

OpenAI plans to expand this capability beyond IDEs to more Mac apps in the future. The feature is set to roll out to all Mac desktop users, including those on the free tier, as OpenAI continues developing ChatGPT into a more integrated desktop assistant.
One day, hopefully Apple will have a smarter Siri AI that can also help developers with their Xcode projects. But recent reports have claimed a conversational Siri might not debut until 2027.
