Feds Approve Signal Jammers to Block Phones, Drones in Prisons
The federal government is allowing prisons and correctional facilities to use radio signal jammers to block unauthorized cell phones and drones.
This move is meant to stop smuggled phones and drone deliveries by criminals, which pose a security risk inside federal and Quebec provincial prisons, announced Ottawa on Friday.
As of March 3, 2025, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) and Quebec’s Sous-ministériat des services correctionnels (SMSC) have been granted permission to use jammer technology under a new exemption from Canada’s Radiocommunication Act. This is the first time such an exemption has been granted for correctional facilities, explained François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
The jammers work by blocking wireless signals, preventing prisoners from making unauthorized calls or receiving contraband via drones.
“The order represents a pilot project and offers CSC and SMSC a controlled opportunity to deploy and evaluate jammer technology, setting an example for other correctional organizations in Canada that may consider the use of jammers in the future,” said Champagne.
He also said on X, “Criminals won’t get a free pass to run operations from behind bars. We are taking action to keep Canadians safe.”
Many replied asking what the Liberal government has been doing up until now. “Criminals have had a “free pass” for over 10 years. Cellphones have been around for decades but only now do you think it’s a good idea to block wireless communications in Canadian prisons,” criticized user Tim Nelson on X.

I mean you have to place them and then keep them in jail first for this to be a net positive instead of letting criminals back out on bail within few hours of capture. lol
Funny, there are nominds that think letting a criminal out on bail twice in a day is a good thing.
SMH….

Hmm I'm curious how much radiation cell jammers emit. It would have to overwhelm a cell phone's 1.6W, by a wide margin because of the distance between the phone and the jammer.
Probably not the healthiest thing to be around.
