Microsoft Accidentally Teases Steam Label in Xbox UI Mockup

Microsoft has reportedly leaked a potential future UI update for the Xbox App during the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025. An image showing a Steam label for PC games, designated to installed titles on PC has been discovered.
During GDC 2025, Microsoft released a mockup image for an official blog post dubbed ‘GDC 2025: Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox.’ It didn’t take long before many noticed the TV display image showing a ‘Steam’ marked label. Microsoft quickly took the image down. However, by then, the image had been saved and circulated.
In the image above, a refreshed version of the Xbox UI is shown. As part of this, Microsoft seems to have included a label for Steam, alongside a label for ‘Installed’, ‘Owned’, and ‘Game Pass’ titles. It’s one of those small touches that unless you really dig deep to search the image, you’d likely not even notice it. Additionally, the Steam tab can also be seen on the tablet and handheld display.
In a recent report from The Verge, sources claimed that Microsoft is indeed developing a version of its Xbox app that’ll show users all games installed on their PCs. This includes titles purchased from Steam. The report also notes that titles from Epic Game Store will also be included. However, there does not appear to be a designated tab for this in the mockups. “I understand Microsoft will label these games accordingly,” The Verge‘s Tom Warren says in the report.
It is worth noting that the image rendering the Xbox app refresh is only a mere mockup. There’s no guarantee that Microsoft will end up shipping an update on this status. Currently, this update and incorporation of Steam and Epic Game Store labels is “in the early stages” and may not even roll out to users.
Recently, Microsoft has been reported to be working with a third-party original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to develop ‘Project Kennan’, an Xbox-branded PC handheld. Likely to be partnered with Asus, a ROG Ally-like device may ship later this year with Xbox branding, an Xbox guide button, and prominent use of Windows 11 and PC Game Pass.
