Amazon and Nokia Strike Deal to End Global Patent War

Amazon and Nokia have settled a longstanding patent dispute spanning three continents, the latter announced on Monday (via Bloomberg).
The two companies had been embroiled in a legal battle since Nokia accused the e-commerce giant of misusing its patented video streaming technology for Prime Video and Twitch back in 2023. Nokia filed lawsuits against Amazon in the U.S., Germany, India, the U.K., and at the European Unified Patent Court.
Last year, Amazon clapped back by taking Nokia to court in Delaware for allegedly using Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing infrastructure and security technology without a license.
In its Monday announcement, Nokia said the two companies have resolved all patent litigation between them under confidential terms. The agreement will cease all ongoing court proceedings over patent disputes between Amazon and Nokia globally, including the former’s U.S. countersuit.
In a statement, Amazon said it has struck a “multi-year patent agreement” with Nokia. Neither company chose to publicize any further details of the settlement.
While Nokia hasn’t been a household name in the smartphone game for years now, the Finnish telecom giant still plays a major role in the space behind the scenes. Back in 2023, Nokia signed a massive 5G patent license agreement with Apple.
