Freedom Mobile 5G+ Gets Faster—But You’ll Need the Right Phone
Freedom Mobile has started turning on a new chunk of spectrum—known as 3800 MHz—on its 5G+ network across parts of Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. The upgrade promises faster speeds for customers with compatible phones and plans, with potential download speeds over 1 Gbps.
“The activation of 3800 MHz spectrum within our network shows our determination to challenge the Big Three while establishing a strong fourth competitor in Canada’s wireless market”, says Pierre Karl Peladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, in an issued statement.
“Since its acquisition by Quebecor, Freedom Mobile has invested heavily in network infrastructure to expand its capabilities while maintaining the competitive pricing that Canadians deserve. We remain committed to innovation that keeps wireless services both affordable and accessible,” said Peladeau.
Some of the areas already seeing upgrades include:
- Ontario: Greater Toronto Area, Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Hamilton
- Alberta: Calgary, Edmonton (including the airport), West Edmonton Mall, and St. Albert
- British Columbia: Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, and Delta
More areas will get the faster network in the coming months.
The 3800 MHz spectrum works alongside existing 3500 MHz airwaves and uses what’s called n77 band technology. It brings faster data and lower lag than regular 5G. Recently, Freedom Mobile launched some new promo plans for those seeking nationwide coverage only.
To take advantage of it, you’ll need a 5G+ plan and a phone that works with 3800 MHz. Supported devices right now include the iPhone 16 series and Motorola Razr+. Support is coming soon for the Samsung Galaxy S24 line, Z Fold6, Z Flip6, and Pixel 9 series.
