Netflix Adds New Subtitles Without All the Noisy Stuff

Netflix has launched a new subtitle feature aimed at the growing number of viewers who prefer to watch with captions on. According to the company, 50% of Americans now watch content with subtitles most of the time — a trend reflected in Netflix’s own data, where nearly half of all viewing hours in the U.S. include subtitles or captions.
To improve the experience, Netflix has introduced a new “spoken dialogue only” subtitle option in the original language. Unlike the existing Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC), which include sound effects and speaker labels, the new option shows just the spoken words—no extra audio cues like “[door slams]” or “[phone ringing].” So this means you only see subtitles for spoken text and you don’t waste time reading text for sound effects and such, making for a cleaner experience.
The feature debuts with Season 5 of YOU today and will expand to all new Netflix originals going forward, in every language Netflix supports.
When selecting subtitles during playback, viewers will now see two English options:
- English (spoken dialogue only)
- English (CC) (includes sound effects and speaker names)
The update aims to give users more control over how they watch—whether they’re tuning in with background noise, trying not to wake someone, or simply prefer reading along. Netflix also reminded viewers that subtitle styles can be customized, including font and size.

Yeah you pretty much have to watch Andor and Rogue One with subtitles on, it's insane how hard it is to understand dialogue in that series, as great as it is, compared to say Star Wars A New Hope.
Nobody wants to say their subtitles are usually wrong…generated by AI.
