Google Announces ‘The Android Show: I/O Edition’ for May 13

Google is set to kick off its annual developer conference with a special Android-focused event ahead of Google I/O 2025. Titled “The Android Show: I/O Edition,” the livestream will premiere on May 13 on YouTube and the Android website.

Hosted by Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, the event aims to provide early insights into upcoming Android updates before the main I/O conference begins on May 20.

This pre-I/O event marks a shift in Google’s approach, as recent I/O conferences have placed greater emphasis on AI advancements, such as Gemini and Project Astra, rather than Android. By dedicating a separate session to Android, Google signals its intention to highlight the operating system’s evolution and its integration with emerging technologies.

While the Android Show will focus on consumer-facing features and updates, Google I/O 2025 will delve deeper into developer-oriented sessions. Anticipated topics include Android 16, codenamed “Baklava,” which is expected to introduce enhancements for foldables, tablets, and other form factors.

Material 3 Expressive, a new user interface design for Android, will also be presented. Additionally, updates to Android XR, Google’s extended reality platform developed with Samsung, and Wear OS 6, anticipated to power upcoming smartwatches like the Pixel Watch 4, are expected to be unveiled.
