Netflix to Remove Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Remaining Interactive Specials Next Week

Netflix is due to remove Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend from the streaming service next week. With the removal of these two projects, the last of the remaining interactive specials will no longer be available to enjoy.

Since 2023, Netflix has slowly been culling all of its interactive specials from the service, focusing more on investments in traditional games. As reported by What’s On Netflix, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend are next on the chopping block.

Bandersnatch is the rather critically acclaimed standalone interactive special from the Black Mirror franchise. Released in 2018, Bandersnatch stars Fionn Whitehead, Will Poulter and Craig Parkinson. The interactive special tells the story of a game developer in 1984, who is working on a project with branching paths. Bandersnatch has multiple ending and a lot of meta commentary littered throughout its 90-minute runtime. However, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch begs users to unlock new endings, resulting in different ways the story may conclude.

In 2020, Netflix released Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend. As a surprise follow-up to the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt series, Kimmy vs. the Reverend is an interactive special where Kimmy is due to get married to Prince Frederick. However, she must first confront the reverend and his evil plans.

Netflix has been steadily removing other interactive specials over time. All but four specials were removed from the streaming service back in 2024. Earlier this year, Netflix removed Ranveer vs Wild with Bear Grylls and You vs. Wild.

Unlike the other specials, the Bear Grylls interactive specials were repurposed and launched as traditional episodes of TV. The removal of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is especially upsetting because it establishes so much for the universe. In Episode 4 of the latest season, Black Mirror’s Plaything episode acts as a sequel to the interactive special, with Will Poulter reprising his role. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend also acts as a sequel to the core series. It’s currently unknown whether Netflix intends to repurpose either project.
