Google Search Gets Smarter With New AI Mode and More

At Google I/O 2025, Google unveiled major AI updates to Search, introducing a new AI Mode designed to offer deeper, more personalized, and task-oriented results.

The new experience builds on last year’s launch of AI Overviews, which the company says has already led to a double-digit increase in search engagement in key markets like the U.S. and India.

AI Mode, rolling out now in the U.S. (sorry Canada, we’ll have to wait), enables users to ask more complex, multimodal questions and receive detailed, context-aware responses with links to the web. It uses a technique called query fan-out to break down a question into subtopics and run multiple searches at once, surfacing richer, more relevant information. A custom version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 model powers the new AI features behind the scenes.

One of the highlights is Deep Search, which takes the query fan-out further by issuing hundreds of searches and compiling expert-level, fully cited summaries—ideal for research. Another feature called Search Live, inspired by Project Astra, allows users to interact with Google Search using their camera in real time. Simply point your phone at something and ask a question, and Search will respond with insights and helpful links.

Google is also making Search more action-oriented with new agentic capabilities. For example, users can ask Search to find two tickets for a baseball game, and the AI will scan various sites for pricing and availability, pre-fill forms, and present tailored results. This functionality is launching first for tickets, restaurant bookings, and local appointments, in collaboration with partners like Ticketmaster, Resy, and Vagaro.

One demo is leveraging AI Mode that can now help you save time when you need to buy things like tickets. This is going to be so helpful and time-saving, as AI Mode will find tickets based on your criteria, making it a breeze for a tedious task:

In shopping, AI Mode now helps users narrow down product options and even try on clothes virtually by uploading a photo. Soon, Gemini will even be able to complete purchases for users using Google Pay, with user permission.

Search is also becoming more personal. Users can opt in to connect their Gmail and other Google apps, allowing Search to factor in trip plans, past bookings, and preferences for more tailored suggestions—like recommending restaurants near your hotel with outdoor seating.

For data-heavy questions, AI Mode can now create custom graphs and visualizations, such as comparing sports stats or financial data, pulling from real-time sources.

Google says AI Mode is rolling out now in the U.S., with more experimental features coming to Labs in the weeks ahead. Users can opt in to test them by turning on AI Mode in Search Labs. Can’t wait for this AI Mode to land here in Canada, stay tuned.
