Gmail Will Soon Write Emails Using Your Own Style and Docs

At Google I/O 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Gmail will soon gain personalized smart replies, an AI-powered feature that crafts responses in your own tone and style—using context from your past emails and files, with permission.

Rolling out this summer for subscribers, the new feature taps into Gemini to help users respond more thoughtfully and quickly. During the keynote, Pichai demonstrated how Gemini can handle an email from a friend asking for road trip advice by pulling from Drive and past emails to write a detailed reply.

“Let’s say my friend wrote to me looking for advice. He’s taking a road trip to Utah, and he remembers I did this trip before,” said Pichai. “Now, if I’m being honest, I would probably reply something short and unhelpful. Sorry, Felix. But with personalized smart replies, I can be a better friend.”

Pichai explained that Gemini pulled itinerary notes from a Google Doc titled “Trip to Zion National Park,” matched his typical greetings and tone, and even used his favourite adjective—’exciting’.

“It included details like keeping driving time under five hours per day,” he added. “Looks great. Maybe you want to make a couple of changes to it and hit send.”

The ability for Gemini to grab your Google Drive files and to even learn your tone and style and favourite words in a personalized smart reply? Now that’s one heck of a timesaver when it comes to drafting up an email.

“But with personalized smart replies, I can be a better friend.”

One of the creepiest marketing statements of all time. Right out of Black Mirror.

“help users respond more thoughtfully and quickly”

Literally, less thoughtful is the entire premise.
